Not sure what to wear this year for Halloween? Neither am I. Whether you’re looking for something that’s spooktacular or sextacular (yes, I just made that up), here’s the top 5 Halloween costumes we’re likely to see a lot of this year. In no particular order.
Why? Well, the movie just came out and was a huge it. And, there’s blue costumes, everywhere. It’s slick and sexy in an animal sort of way.
2. Lady Gaga
Why? It’s Lady Gaga. Enough said. Also, there’s tons of wigs and variations of her crazy outfits everywhere. You can easily throw on just about anything eccentric (as long as you’re not wearing pants) and call it Lady Gaga. Shall I open bets on how many “meat dresses” we’ll be seeing?
3. The Situation/Snookie
Why? I don’t even know. All you really need is this shirt if you’re a guy and some bumpits if you’re a girl. Since we’re in Scottsdale I’ll unfortunately have to say this is the easiest costume for most anyone to pull off. Yikes.
4. Old Spice Guy
Why? It’s freaking funny. And easy. Bring on the abs!
5. Alice in Wonderland
Why? Another uber popular movie that was recently released. This is one of those that’s awesome as an ensemble so everyone in your group can play a character. Alice, Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatter…you get the drift.
Bonus: BP Old Spill
Why? It’s funny. It’s just wrong.
Double Bonus: A politically incorrect, albeit hilarious attack on Jan Brewer/Joe Arpaio/SB1070. Why? It’s Arizona. You just know someone’s bound to do it.
What do you think? Have any others to add to the list or great costume ideas? Leave em below!
When it comes to Phoenix fashion events, some are more “scene” than “show.” And although some events pop up here and there that are defintely worthy of checking out, the others often remind us that this is Arizona, after all, not exactly the fashion hub of the world. (I know even you’re tired of seeing this girl and this guy out and about thinking they’re oh-so-chic.)
This Friday, however, I’m totally stoked to check out a fashionable affair worthy of your time: Valley Vintage at the Hotel Valley Ho, an evening filled with retro fashion ranging from swimwear to evening gowns and everything in between.
The show itself will feature FORD/Robert Black models in both one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and neo-retro styles. And to add to the throwback vibe of the evening, models and actors clad in 50s attire will be mingling with the audience throughout the night. Think, housewives in pearls, cigar girls, beatniks and even themed entertainment. Black and white TV ads anyone? There will even be passed hors d’oevres and cocktails promised to have a 50s flair, too.
You can get tickets here, and a portion of proceeds from the evening will benefit Florence Crittendon Foundation. Doors open at 730pm and there will be a cash bar and nibbles circulated too. Bring out your best 50s garb! It’s sure to be a glamourous Old Hollywood affiar.
By the way, how insane cute is that green outfit above? Classic. Tasteful. Glamorous.
This post may or may not date me. But I will say that this conversation has come up more than once and so, needed to happen. So if, horror of all horrors, you find yourself realizing an entire decade has passed between your blossoming adolescence and the overhyped period known as your 20s, you’re likely dying to go back and blow everyone away and/or prove you’ve still got it. Which really (in addition to losing a few lbs.) all amounts to what you wear. Forget about if you’re still single, onto your third divorce or unemployed (hey, the economy sucks right?), look the part, get a cocktail and have a good time. Here’s how:
1. Relax. Stress is only going to make you break out, bite your nails, overeat or insert-whatever-bad-habit-you-have-here. And these are all the last things you want during your reunion. Take a second, breathe and realize if you’ve managed to survive High School (and the past 10, 20 or 30 years of your life) you’ll survive this evening too.
2. Assess the situation. Are you getting together for a casual picnic or an evening at a resort? Before having the what-to-wear panic attack, determine if the event calls for something casual or a little bit dressier.
3.Don’t try something new. And by new, I mean out-of-body experience-new. It’s O.K. to swipe on some lipstick or pile on a few extra baubles you may not normally wear, but if you’re not one to wear heels (or leather pants for that matter) this isn’t the night to try it.
4. Don’t try too hard. It’s obvious. It’s sad. People will see right through it. Stick to the classic rule by eliminating one accessory before leaving the house for an effortlessly chic, yet pulled together, look.
5. When in doubt, wear black. It’s classic and works for pretty much every occasion.
Try some cute leggings, heels and a nice top. If it’s chilly out a loosely fitted blazer also dresses up the look.
When in doubt, jeans, jeans, jeans. Paired with a nice top (I tend to stick to black) and heels, it’s goof-proof.
For happy hours or daytime events a flirty skirt or dress paired with boots or flats is the key to casual chic.
For cocktail attire…options are endless!
Have you been to a High School reunion yet? What did you wear??
There’s lots going on this weekend. And by lots, I mean lots. What with Kierland Commons celebrating its 10th anniversary this weekend and a party this evening at Scottsdale Quarter, there’s plenty of fun to be had. But first up on the agenda is to pick up your Care Card. Haven’t bought one before? Here is everything you need to know.
The Care Card is presented by The Board of Visitors and The Junior League of Phoenix and for just $50, grants you 20% off at more than 600 participating Valley retailers. Think Gucci, Micahel Kors, Banana Republic and restaurants faves too like Delux, Zen 32, ZinBurger and more. (For the complete list of participating retailers, click here.)
Care Card discounts are running now through October 24th and 100% of proceeds benefit Ryan House, a home for children living with life-threatening conditions.
To celebrate, stop by the kick-off party tonight at Anthropologie at Kierland Commons. Bring in your Care Card for discounts and enjoy plenty of Champagne, shopping and desserts too! Plus, since it all benefits charity, you’ll have nothing to feel guilty about. You can purchase your Care Card here.
Oh and by the way, plenty of retailers are offering even more goodies than just the 20% discount. We’re talking wine samplings, snacks, mini spa treatments and more! You’ll find all the details for special events here.
My disdain toward Uggs is not really a secret. Even if I’d admitted in the past their usefulness from time to time, they’re still ugly. I’ve even posted several fabulous alternatives that are both functional, comfortable and stylish. But, no matter, they don’t seem to be going away. And high-end designer brands like Jimmy Choo have noticed that, forming a collaboration in the form of the new UGG & Jimmy Choo capsule collection.
Oh yes, now those crazy comfortable (and crazy ugly boots) come adorned in studs, grommets and patterns too. Will Jimmy Choo die-hards rejoice or be offended? See for yourself…
A pair of these babies will set you back a mere $595 to $795. Or, you can buy a Bedazzler and try it out on your own…
What do you think? Would you sport these UGGs?
You can pre-order a pair, here.
Scottsdale Fashion Week may not officially kick off for another month, but you can see a show and competition of some talented local designers tonight, at SMOcA’s (Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art) Fall Opening Celebration. Ten local designers will showcase a few looks from their collection for the coveted title of Scottsdale Fashion Week Designer of the Year; the winner will show their line at Scottsdale Fashion Week in November!
The 10 finalists competing tonight include:
- Coleccion by Alma Salaz
- DLCouture by Danell Lynn
- iuk iuk by Alina Samasiuk
- Jennyvi Dizon
- Lesage by Kate Lesage
- Nostalgic Boutique by Rebecca Turley
- Punkouture by Trish Martin
- Shantidas, LLC by Shantidas Contu-Owen
- Siobhan by Elizabeth Albert
- Tiffe Fermaint
The show is free and open to the public. Plus, you’ll get to soak in the new artwork the gallery is showcasing tonight. Stop by for the museum opening from 6:30 to 9pm, the fashion show kicks off at 9pm!
I know, you’re hestiant on even bothering to read this post because obviously I’m going to go on about pairing Ed Hardy with some True Religions and make sure that everything’s bedazzled, right? Well, this time, I’ll keep it short and sweet. Sometimes, all you need is a visual.
Enter, The Situation Shirt, because The Jersey Shore hasn’t offended us enough just yet. It comes in baby blue too and in either this wife beater or T-shirt variety.
Don’t worry girls, in case you missed it before check out my previous post on how to dress tacky. I’m thinking, a gal in some sluttastic attire and her man in The Situation shirt would make quite the cute Scottsdale, er, Halloween pair.
You can get it here or by emailing email@example.com.
And yes, that does appear to be a clear film covering the abs. Probably to help keep girls hands off you deflate some of the impact you’ll get from everyone sucker punching you.
Ready for the weekend? If you’re feeling like me, you’ve been awaiting it since Monday! This weekend promises to be fashion-packed with stylespotting and fashionista events; read on for your what-to-do-this-weekend guide.

Then: Don’t get too shopped out, after Heidi Boutique head on over to W Scottsdale for some serious stylespotting at Wonka, W Scottsdale’s Birthday Celebration. Last year’s Alice in Wonderland soiree was a total smash and this year is promising even more fun in the form of acrobats, treats and maybe even some Oompa Loompas. It may not be an “official” fashion event but trust, this will be the spot to ogle (and judge) others’ outfits tonight.
Did you get your Wonka bar ticket for admittance?
Sunday: You may be tempted to party it up Friday night but save some energy for Sunday night’s Celebrity Catwalk for a Cause. The event benefits the American Cancer Society and Luv Shack Ranch and will showcase fabulous fashions, and the winners of Get Image Ready and Phoenix Women’s Magazine local model search who will strut the catwalk alongside local celebs. Tickets start at $40. For registration and full event details, click here.
Have a great weekend! P.S. Got any great outfit ideas for all these parties? Hmmm….
