One of my favorite wedding trends this year is mismatched bridesmaid dresses. Forget the whole idea of choosing matchy matchy dresses your girls will never wear again and instead, think outside the box like these gals did!

I just wrapped up a story on how to pull off mismatched bridesmaid dresses and really, there are just a few key principles to keep in mind if you’re thinking about trying this out for your wedding.

  1.  Consider doing “shades of” a certain color palette. This works especially well with neutral and pastel shades.
  2. If you’re doing “shades of” tell your maids a certain length or fabric to stick to so it looks cohesive (like the last photo above).
  3. Consider picking one color but letting each of your bridesmaids choose the actual style of dress.

The last is the easiest of the three to pull off, especially if you are going with a black dress or find a particular designer you like. There’s also a great two-part series with plenty of photos and tips on how to pull it off on the wedding blog, Belle the Magazine.

For my wedding, my bridesmaids are wearing mismatched bridesmaid dresses in the same color. Check out my latest episode of Behind the Veil where I get some expert tips on pulling off mismatched bridesmaid dresses.

What about you? Are you considering having mismatched bridesmaid dresses?

My bridesmaids all wore a different style but in floor-length black satin, so even though the cuts were totally different, it looked really well put together.

Thanks for the comment! That sounds very elegant. My bridesmaids are also wearing full-length dresses, all in the same color but a different style. I’m excited to see how it turns out but I think it’ll be lovely!
