I wasn’t planning on writing this post this year. But after the fashion diasasters I saw at the Phoenix Open yesterday (and the texts and phone calls about what to wear to this event) I decided I really just had to.
For whatever reason, the combination of an outdoor daytime event+wanting to look cute sends most girls into total panic. I promise, you can look fab without gobs of makeup or looking like you’re barhopping on a Saturday night. That means everything that you might wear to a club, needs to be scratched off the list.
Instead, think: sundresses, cute shorts, jeans, sandals, wedges and maybe even boots since it’s not too warm out yet. Note how I didn’t include stilettos or black dresses in that list. It’s the OPEN ladies, which means GOLF, which is usually done on this type of turf called GRASS. Even though we live in the desert I promise you’ve seen it before; it’s green and acts like quicksand if you’re standing in it in your stilletos.
Something like these Giuseppe Zanotti ankle cuff denim sandals is super chic and casual. Note how even though I said no stilettos, doesn’t mean I advised a T-shirt and some sneakers.
Unless, of course, it’s a tee like these. Layered right and with cool accessories, it doesn’t look like a tee at all.
Speaking of layering, here’s a cute look that shows how to do it right. At a breezy yet sunny almost 70 degrees, layering is a great idea. If you’re in the sun you can always take off the cardigan but when hiding out in the shade you’ll be thankful you’re a bit covered.
Here’s some more great ideas to get you started. Dresses, leggings, sandals, flats, jeans are all A-O.K. Don’t forget to accessorize with your best shades and some SPF.
Lastly, unless you absolutely know what you’re doing, please resist trying for the preppy-golf-girl look. The attempt is so obvious, not to mention usually results in something awful like argyle socks paired with a jean skirt. Yes, I actually saw that look yesterday.
