Look to Love: Socks with Boots

I love socks. There are so many different kinds and so many ways to wear them that I feel they’re quite the under-appreciated fashion item. This fall, get creative with your favorite pairs and style them with boots. Here’s some looks to get your gears going.

5 fashion trends we’re bound to regret

Don’t lie, you know you’ve looked back at pictures from back in the day and thought to yourself “what was I wearing?!”

80s fashion trends 5 fashion trends were bound to regret

This wasn't a good look...for anyone.

Then, the excuses follow:

“Well, it was sooooo in style back then!”

“Celebrity so-and-so totally pulled it off”

Etc.

Scared of making some repeat offenses? Here’s 5 fashion trends that may be cute now, but in a few years may lead us to wonder how we were so out of our minds.

Pajama pants

Maybe PJs should be kept in the bedroom

When worn right on tall, thin model types, I find pajama pants quite chic. But take a step back and try to remember your initial reaction when you saw these because I’m SURE you didn’t love them right away. For most body types, they aren’t flattering. And maybe some items should just be kept in the bedroom. I suspect in a few years, we’ll definitely be wondering what the heck we were thinking.

 Clogs

Ugh, please make these go away

I didn’t like these the first time around, or the next time either. Clogs are back, but I won’t shed a tear when they’re gone again.

Rompers and jumpsuits

The onesie, would you?

When you’re wearing what’s essentially a onesie, an item of clothing designed for infants, maybe there is a reason they’re just for infants. Some may be cute but for the most part, they’re incredibly hard to pull off. Not to mention, a total pain in the ass if you need to use the bathroom. Talk about awkward.

Boyfriend jeans

It's hard to look sexy in something ill-fitting

It’s sexy to throw on your boyfriend’s shirt after a romp in the bedroom, but that doesn’t mean you’d go out in public in just his shirt and sex hair. So why shouldn’t the same thought process apply to boyfriend jeans? I’ll admit, they’re totally comfy. But the baggy, loose look (especially cuffed and worn with heels) is dumpy, not sexy.

Chokers

She has no neck. Hardly flattering.

I’m watching the spring 2012 New York Fashion Week shows as I write this post and it looks like chokers, a big fall 2011 fashion trend, are here to stay. The problem? While I like some chokers, they aren’t flattering. At all. They cut the neck off entirely and make your head look like it’s floating on your shoulders.

Not sure if you’re wearing a future fashion fad? Here’s a hint: ask your boyfriend! While we may criticize men often for just not “getting” fashion, they do have a pretty blunt view of what’s attractive and what’s not. Perhaps the reason they don’t “get it” is for a reason.

What do you think are the fashion fads of the past few seasons?

Fall trend to try now: Sheer

My friends on Twitter are already complaining that at just 9am, it’s 103 degrees.

Yeah, it sucks. Fall fashion should be far from the mind. But in my very air-conditioned office stacked with fall fashion magazines, it isn’t. And if you’re also daydreaming of cooler days full of tights and leggings, have already stocked up on bright bold pants and glued your guide to transitioning to fall fashion to the fridge, you can certainly add another fall fashion trend to the “buy now” list: sheer.

How much more brilliant could this trend be? With a heat advisory out, of course I want to be in something breathable and sheer. Alexander Wang, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Christian Dior and more designers just loved draping models in see-through fabrics.

For real-life wear, I’d absolutely recommend layering a plain tank underneath (visible nipples only work on the runway, after all.) Here’s some looks that are wearable and totally cute.

Transition to fall fashion: What to keep, store and toss

As the transition from summer to fall fashion starts, there’s no better time to clean out your wardrobe and start planning on which pieces from previous seasons you can keep, should store or need to toss.

KEEP

Maxi dresses and Maxi skirts

Dark and earth-tone colors can be transitioned into the fall season

Maxi dresses and maxi skirts are still a strong 2011 fall fashion trend. If you have any that are solid-colored or in a print that can be transitioned to fall, go ahead and keep it in your closet for some winter wear. Thinking it may be too cold? Remember, you can always layer a cardigan or sweater with a maxi dress or skirt. See the how to wear a maxi skirt guide which has some pictures for inspiration.

Bright-colored pants

Keep bright pants for wear through fall!

Bold and bright pants and jeans were so hot for spring and summer. The good news is, they’re totally hot for fall too. If you already have a pair of red pants or another fun hue, keep them in your closet; this trend has staying power.

Wide-leg pants

Loving that 70s vibe

That 70s vibe has been oh-so-enchanting this season, with billowy tops and wide-leg pants everywhere. Personally, I’ve always thought a great-fitting pair of wide-leg jeans/trousers is pretty classic. And if you picked up a pair for the spring, they’re staying on trend through the fall too.

STORE

Little white dress

Store that little white dress for use next spring

Just like its classic counter part, the little black dress, the LWD is one “trend” that’s barely even a trend, it’s a spring/summer staple. While you won’t be able to get much mileage out of summery white dresses this fall, go ahead and store them in your closet for some revival come the spring 2012 season.

Floppy hats

Always chic-save for summer!

I love a wide floppy hat. They’re perfect for poolside glamour, beachy days, or just strolling the streets on a nice summer day. This season, everyone from Shopbop to Target carried a variety of glamorous picks. Store these babies for next season when you’re sure to be able to use them again.

TOSS

Jumpsuits

The one-piece look? Totally over it.

Sure, I’m still seeing jumpsuits and rompers in stores. But that doesn’t mean it should be worn. After all, crocs and blinged-out Ed Hardy is still in stores too. Unless you’re an infant or under the age of 12, go ahead and toss those one-piece jumpsuits and playsuits.

Flatforms

derek lam flatforms Transition to fall fashion: What to keep, store and toss

Flatforms? No thanks.

Did anyone ever really embrace this trend anyway? Flatforms have to be one of  the ugliest spring 2011 fashion trends I’ve seen in awhile. If you did pick up a pair, they may be better off at Goodwill.

Fall trend to try now: bright bold pants

My mailbox is already packed with fall fashion magazines. It’s my favorite time of year. I get to ogle over beautiful coats, dramatic dresses, sexy boots, gloves–I heart fall fashion. But it isn’t quite time to transition to fall fashion yet. At least not here where it’s a humid 100 degrees today and it would take a nutty blogger to tell you to start your transition by layering with a cardigan. Yeah, no thanks.

Instead, it’s the perfect time of year to stock up on summer fashions which are on clearance just about everywhere. (Bliss Boutique is one that’s having 50% off all summer staples this week!)  It’s also the perfect time to start stocking up on fall fashion items that you can actually wear–now!

One fun fall 2011 fashion trend you can start wearing now is the bold, bright pant. Like candy-colored shorts and the fun-colored jeans we saw for spring/summer 2011, the fall pants are fun, funky and refreshing. Especially for a season that’s normally known for it’s moody grays and blacks.

The best part is, not only can you start wearing them now (after all, what could possibly be more summery than some bright-colored pants?!) they come in all types of silhouettes too: from straight-leg to the high-waisted variety, you’re likely to find a hot hue that suits you.

If you aren’t sure how to wear the trend, try a white or nude-colored blouse. A crisp white button down also makes for an always-classic look. For the more daring, a top in the same color scheme, but a bit more subtle, is also a chic look.

What do you think? Will you try some funky-colored pants for fall, or maybe even now?
